Sherborne Abbey is built from this beautiful stone from Ham Hill in Somerset. I visited the working quarry there and chose this piece to carve. Stone carving is a skill that, the 2008 artist in residence, Michel Brimble brought to the School. I learned a lot about the technique from him but I also looked at many artists working in stone such as Epstein and Gill. There are wonderful examples of their very fine carvings in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
