The Mouth
My Mouth was the outcome of a protracted period spent looking into the mouth as it has been represented and used by other artists. Frances Bacon and Mona Hatoum figure large in his research but the development of the form and its fabrication owe a dept to Michael Brimble who has been Artist in Residence at the School since January.
The sculpture was originally designed to be a fountain, in the spirit of Niki de St Phalle at the Pompidou. I just slipped up by choosing to make the initial form out of paper and cardboard! But the high gloss finish is achived with a syntetic resin and this seals the suface. I still maintain that it would have survived with water.
