These fantasy paintings are the outcome of my duel interest in the work of the British and Japanese artists Paula Rego and Yoshimoto Nara. Both artists explore the unsettling imagery of childhood. For both artists toys, clothes, and the ehepemera of the nursery or the preschool get muddled in the mind. Rego draws upon imagery from children’s illustrated books, such as John Tenniel’s classic pictures for Alice in Wonderland, while Nara looks to contemporary cartoons, such as Sponge Bob Square Pants.
