The Art School provides a progressive learning environment to encourage individual responses to artists, ideas and practices. It is a place where art is seen made and discussed.
The Art School ran its learning programme with a studio/workshop mentoring approach. The studios were open for an extended day seven days a week.
The Art School was organised to facilitate and encourage students to learn together and from one another. The staff supported young art students in formulating and managing their work independently. Emphasis was also placed on working in creative collaboration with other students, staff and visitiing and resident professional atists, in open discursive and practical forums. The resources of the department included the School's own Oliver HOLT gallery and the Jerrame Gallery in the town: these 'live' art resources indicated the importance placed in this Art School on relentless reference to larger enterprise of professional creative practice and the culture of galleries and museums. To this end the Art School had strong links with the New Art Centre at Roche Court, Bridport Arts Centre and the Arts University at Bournemouth and other regional and national agencies. Further international, cosmopolitan engagement was promoted through a well stocked and very well used departmental library, and subscriptions to a wide range of current art periodicale. All art staff were encouraged to pursue their own creative work and this was seen to be a part of the total cultural contribution and productiity of the Art School.
Aesthetic matters are fundamental for the harmonious development of both society and the individual.
