12 September – 5 October 2008‘SKIRT’ was a new site specific work by JAIMINI PATEL Patel has conceived this work following a number of site visits. The work was fabricated from several kilometres of parcel tape in a meticulous configuration determined by the space. Patel identified this material among the ubiquitous hardware items available locally. Following other recent interventions by the artist, using vernacular resources to address local situations, Patel executed this elaborate work on site: using the HOLT space with its bewitching central iron pillar as a hub and scarred parquet flooring as an adhesive anchor for her structure. Patel says, ‘Using materials from my everyday I employ slight interventions to reveal a particular moment. By following my curiosity about how things happen and what they do, I want to find that which jogs our visual memory sending it in disparate directions. … I want to find this moment when we cannot see what is happening before our eyes, when a line appears where there was not one before, when a thing is neither one thing nor another or a place stops being one place and starts being somewhere else.’ |
