Scenes from a Story
This is a set of works that have an imaginative starting point in the work of Paula Rego. This artist often uses quite surreal juxtapositions of well drawn figures and characters that look like drawings. For my work I used little toys. By making the drawings of the toys relatively large I think they seem a bit confusing. The drawings are very simple but they are seen through very thick glass (actually it is a special plastic material that has the slightly green quality of glass). This has the effect of making the drawings appear to be far off and dream like: the effect is helped by the choice subjects that suggest a nursery rhymes but you cant work out the verse they refer to. In the same way the areas of colour in the background do not follow the contours established in the drawing.
